New Year's Celebrations: South Queensferry Loony Dook

Okay, here's a New Year’s tradition that is a bit frosty to say the least - how about a Loony Dook dip? 

Perhaps, you’ve heard of the Polar Bear Plunge, well, near Edinburgh you can take a dip at the world Famous Loony Dook, which is part of the Edinburgh’s Hogmanay Festival. This event raises funds for area charities, and what a better way to start off the New Year than by helping others.

On New Year’s day there will be the Dookers’ Parade, which is led by the Beastie Drummers. Then, all  the Loonies will gather for the Dook that will have almost 1000 brave Loonies who will dive into the freezing waters of the Forth Estuary in the shadow of the iconic Forth Bridge. For those on the sidelines, you can cheer these brave souls at various vantage points along the route or down on the beach. Afterwards, stop in for a pint and a bite at one of the pubs, cafes or restaurants in South Queensferry.

A balloon drop takes place at 8 p.m. which is ideal for letting the little ones to celebrate the New Year in style.

New Year's Celebrations: Hanshan Temple Bell Ringing Festival

The celebration of New Year’s is filled with traditions, and we're sharing some of our favorite events from around the globe. So, as the clock starts to chime grab your broom and sweep away all the troubles of the past year, and welcome in the New Year with a fresh, clean start. 

In Suzhou, China you can literally ring in the New Year at the Hanshan Temple Bell Ringing Festival. The Hanshan Temple is among the most famous temples in China. In ancient times the monks at the 1400-year-old temple struck the bell at midnight to remind people a new day was dawning. 

According to local legend it is said that each layman has 108 kinds of annoyances per year. Of course, who has really stopped to count them all, but 108 sounds about right. To hear the bell toll is said to dispel one kind of annoyance. So, when you listen to all 108 bell tolls on New Year Eve you will have good luck and happiness in the coming year.

Join the New Year’s Eve feast before the bell ringing that includes performances of traditional music and dance. Within the ancient halls of the temple you’ll find colorful dragon lanterns and decorations evoking wishes for an auspicious New Year. As the evening progresses you’ll hear the monks chanting Buddhist sutras, and then silence as all who have gathered listens respectfully as the bell is rung 108 times. Listen closely, and you’ll hear the last echoes of the bell before the explosion of countless firecrackers celebrate the welcoming of the New Year.

Explore North America's largest model railroad club display at the Paul Mallery Model Railroad Center in Union County, New Jersey. Hosted by the Model Railroad Club, Inc. with the help of the Department of Parks and Recreation, this almost 11,000 square-foot facility in Lenape Park, has a amazing collection of Model Railroads and Cars.

The Model Railroad Club presents two permanent model railroad layouts in HO scale and N scale. There is also a outdoor "G gauge" or garden railroad demonstration loop, and a temporary indoor "G gauge" layout.  As well as other model railroad and industrial exhibits are also on display. They also build them on site, and you can join and support the club as well.

Along with displaying the fantastic collections, Model Railroad Club, Inc. has holiday exhibits that are a wonderful to  celebrate the season. Among the recent exhibit was a spectacular 1600 square foot model train layout, complete with a light and sound show, at Union County’s Lenape Park in Union Township. The HO scale layout is renowned for its dedication to realistic detail and life-like railroading functions.

Show days and times have run from Late November through Mid December. The HO display have featured a long-distance freight and passenger railroad, an interurban line with trolleys and commuter trains, and a short line representing the workhorse trains that chug through parts of Union County. A double-decked N Scale layout is also on display along with the popular “Classic Streamliners on Parade.”

George Rogers Clark National Historical Park Honored By U.S. Mint

The United States Mint will hold its official launch ceremony for the George Rogers Clark National Historical Park quarter on Tuesday, Nov. 14 at 10:00 a.m. at the Riverfront Pavilion at 102 N 2nd St. in Vincennes, IN.   Event highlights include performances by the George Rogers Clark Fife and Drum Corps and Vogel Elementary School Choir.

The United States Mint America the Beautiful Quarters Program, a 12-year initiative that honors 56 national parks and other national sites authorized by Public Law 110-456.  Each year, the public will see five new national sites depicted on the reverses (tails sides) of the America the Beautiful Quarters.  The United States Mint is issuing these quarters in the order in which the national sites were officially established.

Before the ceremony, the United States Mint will host a coin forum on Monday, November 13, 2017, at 6:00 p.m. (ET) at the George Rogers Clark National Historical Park Visitor Center, 401 S. 2nd St., Vincennes, IN 47591.  The coin forum is an opportunity for the public to learn about upcoming coin programs and initiatives, and express their views about future coinage.

UNESCO Designates San Antonio ‘Creative City of Gastronomy’

 San Antonio is only the second city in the U.S. to earn the distinction of ‘Creative City of Gastronomy’, and is the first in Texas. The city’s culinary heritage is significant for its confluence of many world cultures such as Mexican, Spanish, German and French, as well its geology and geography. Recognizing this diversity, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) designated San Antonio a Creative City of Gastronomy, making the city part of the UNESCO Creative Cities Network (UCCN).

Drawn to San Antonio’s river running between the coastal plains and hill country, for 13,000 years indigenous people foraged roots, harvested pecans and hunted game. Trails and river ways brought trade with other groups who introduced gulf coast game. In the 1700s, Spanish colonists and Canary Islanders introduced new traditions and tastes. Other new flavors, spices and ingredients from Europe, Asia and Africa came with German and other European settlers in the 1800s.

Today the city’s culinary scene has since blossomed in its richness, with chefs honoring and celebrating its culinary heritage through preservation and innovation. Beyond the famous River Walk and historic walls of The Alamo, San Antonio’s culinary scene has historically been firmed planted in blends of Tex-Mex, but has now progressed to “Tex-Next.”

Save On Your Visit To National Parks With A Yearly Pass

Fee increases are not uncommon, and often, they are necessary to provide a better experience for travelers. This is the scenario the National Park Service is considering in their continuous commitment to improve the visitor experience and ensure America’s national parks are protected and maintained for future generations. But, you can save on your visit with their yearly passes.

They are currently looking at increasing fees at highly visited national parks during peak visitor seasons. The proposed peak season entrance fees and revised fees for road-based commercial tours would generate badly needed revenue for improvements to the aging infrastructure of national parks. This includes roads, bridges, campgrounds, waterlines, bathrooms, and other visitor services.

The Proposed Fees And Timeline:

Under the proposal, peak-season entrance fees would be established at only 17 national parks. The peak season for each park would be defined as its busiest contiguous five-month period of visitation. So, during the peak season at each park, the entrance fee would be $70 per private, non-commercial vehicle, $50 per motorcycle, and $30 per person on bike or foot.

These proposed new fees would be implemented at Arches, Bryce Canyon, Canyonlands, Denali, Glacier, Grand Canyon, Grand Teton, Olympic, Sequoia & Kings Canyon, Yellowstone, Yosemite, and Zion National Parks with peak season starting on May 1, 2018.

Fee increases would start at Acadia, Mount Rainier, Rocky Mountain, and Shenandoah National Parks with peak season starting on June 1, 2018.
Also on the list is Joshua Tree National Park, which will see a fee increase starting as soon as practicable in 2018.

Did You Know? Over 20,000 National Park Service employees care for America's 417 national parks, and work with communities across the nation to help preserve local history and create close-to-home recreational opportunities.

My husband and I visit several parks throughout the year, and while we’d prefer not to pay more to visit some of our favorites - we understand the reasoning behind the increases. The current estimates suggest that the peak-season price structure could increase national park revenue by $70 million per year. That is a 34 percent increase over the $200 million collected in Fiscal Year 2016.

Save On Your Visit With A Yearly Pass

Now, if the National Park Service does increase prices there are options for saving on your visit to these national treasures.

Those who enjoy camping and recreation at one park often can get a park-specific annual pass for any of the 17 parks, which would be available for $75. This is a good option for those who plan to visit these parks several times throughout the year, which would pay for your pass in just a few visits.

Another option is the annual America the Beautiful Pass that is the National Parks and Federal Recreational Lands Pass. This particular Pass provides entrance to all federal lands, including parks for a one-year period, and remains only $80. With either Pass you’re helping contribute to preserving our parks, and save money.

Entrance fees are not charged to visitors under 16 years of age or holders of Senior, Military, Access, Volunteer, or Every Kid in a Park (EKIP) passes. The majority of national parks will remain free to enter; only 118 of 417 park sites charge an entrance fee, and the current proposal only raises fees at 17 fee-charging parks

Don’t Miss Louder Than Words: Rock, Power and Politics

Opening on Nov.7 in Grand Rapids, Michigan at the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Museum, “Louder Than Words: Rock, Power and Politics” is a stunning exhibition presented by the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

The exhibit explores how rock music can change attitudes about patriotism, peace, equality and freedom. “Louder Than Words: Rock, Power and Politics” will open during a Ford After Five evening event, November 7 and runs through February 11, which gives you time to see the collection of artifacts.

This is a rare opportunity because it is the first time that Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, Ohio, and the Newseum in Washington, D.C., have partnered together. The result is a one-of-kind exhibit that includes photographs, periodicals and videos. Among the artifacts is also Bono’s 2002 Super Bowl jacket, which he wore during a moving tribute to victims of the 9/11 attacks while performing at the Super Bowl.

“‘Louder Than Words’ highlights how artists have used their craft as a platform to express their views and shape public opinion,” said Greg Harris, president and CEO of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

The exhibit explores how artists exercise their First Amendment rights, challenge assumptions and beliefs, stimulate thought and effect change. Beyond music’s influence on the civil rights movement, the Vietnam War and gender equality, the exhibit also features other significant moments and figures.

“We are honored to have the opportunity to partner with the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame to bring this exhibition to the region,” said Elaine Didier, director of the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Library and Museum.  From ex-Beatle George Harrison’s visit to the White House, to stories of Steve Ford playing Led Zeppelin music from the White House roof, rock music had a definite history during the Ford presidency.

Join Events Celebrating The Neon Museum’s Anniversary

Twhey will also host a Open-Top Bus Tour through Downtown Las Vegas and the northern stretch of Las Vegas Boulevard, highlighting classic signs from the Neon Museum collection. The evening concludes with a special nighttime tour of the Neon Boneyard focusing on the museum’s conservation and restoration efforts, and there is a fee of $50 per person for this particular part of the festivities.

The San Jose Museum of Quilts and Textiles is at a juncture in time, where they  can both reflect on the past and look forward to the future. A juncture can also be an intersection of place or events, often one laden with symbolic potential: In many folk traditions, junctures as represented by crossroads are a potent metaphor for transition. Though a juncture can be a time for reflection, the word can also describe a critical moment or crisis that demands immediate action. With the concept as their point of departure, artists may take the exhibitions theme for "juncture" where it leads them.

“Since our 35th anniversary, the Museum has focused its collecting efforts on historic and contemporary quilts and fiber art since 1940, with an emphasis on California artists” said Executive Director Nancy Bavor. “This exhibition, which includes over 40 art works acquired since our 35th anniversary, is tangible evidence of that concentrated focus and includes important art works by some of California’s leading fiber and quilt artists, as well as works by other internationally known fiber artists.”

Alcatraz East Crime Museum Presents True Crimes Utilizing Rare Artifacts

There's something about crime that keeps us intrigued. For anyone who has ever had a interest in the mob, unsolved mysteries, and criminal proceedings, the Alcatraz East Crime Museum is a must see when visiting Pigeon Forge, Tennessee. This is defiantly one of those attractions draws you in, and keeps you stunned and curious as to what awaits around the corner.

We enjoyed the exhibit space on Pirates that explores the flags used, and history of the escapades. There was also an exhibit on the Old West that revealed details on the life of Billy, The Kid and others like Jesse James, who lived outside the law. Throughout the exhibits you'll find artifacts that include the Pocket Army Revolver owned by Allan Parmer, who was married to Jesse's sister, Susan.

We live in Morgan County, Indiana, which is where John Dillinger once lived, and actually robbed a local grocery store. So, it was interesting to see the exhibit on mobsters, and the death mask of Dillinger himself. The details described by both sides of the law are fascinating. There are newspaper clipping and Public Enemy poster featuring many mobsters you will recognize.

Did You Know? The origins of NASCAR can be traced back to bootlegging - you can learn more about this history and more at the Alcatraz East Crime Museum. And, if you'd like to try some free samples of moonshine visit the Ole Smoky Moonshine Distillery that has a location right behind the AE Museum at The Island. They also have locations in Gatlinburg too, and they offer free concerts with artists like Monroeville!

We are in the heart of the Great Smoky Mountains, so there are many moon-shining tales to be told. Learn about the law and lawless who brewed shine by moon light, and the extraordinary skills of the drivers running the loads during prohibition. These drivers, like NASCAR legend, Junior Johnson, became famous for their skills on and off the track. - Oh, Johnson is a partner in "Midnight Moon" moonshine today, and they use his family recipe to craft the shine.

Remember, the Alcatraz East Crime Museum has a huge collection of artifacts on so many aspects of crime. It's so diverse, and wide ranging you'll spend hours moving from one exhibit to another. It was a strange feeling to see the headlines on the serial killing from my youth. Some of the exhibits stir memories of where we were when these events happened.

There are moving exhibits to Missing Persons like Nancy Halloway, and to the victims and heroes of 9/11. This is one off those moments when you just pause, and take a moment of silence in their honor.

This museum is more than just a achieve of historic relics. Whether it is Bronco that O.J. Simpson drove or postcards written by Charles Manson - each piece within the Alcatraz East Crime Museum has a story to tell. There are so many tales to be told that you'll find yourself discovering new stories each time you visit.

Discover History Captured By Time At The La Brea Tar Pits

One of my favorite places to visit as a child was the La Brea Tar Pits in Los Angeles. I would stand at the edge of the pit and marvel at the Mastodon’s trapped in the tar. Although, the most common fossils found at the Rancho La Brea site have been Dire Wolves, Coyotes, as well as Saber-Toothed Cats.

The tar at the site still bubbles from the natural gases trapped beneath. The site is a time capsule, in which prehistoric animals and birds roaming the area became trapped in the tar, and made easy targets for predators like the wolves and big cats, which also got stuck. It was an endless cycle as you’ll find out as you roam the exhibits within the Page Museum.

Stop and watch the team of paleontologists at the Fossil Lab as they continue to uncover new fossils found in Project 23. This project has uncovered many Ice Age fossils that were trapped in the tar in the Los Angeles Basin between 40,000 and 10,000 years ago. And, they are still digging in the area because they never know what they might find?

Tickets are available for the Ice Age Encounter Stage Show in the Page Museum that features a life-size adult Saber-toothed Cat puppet. Combined with a live performance and film projections, the encounter uncovers the mysteries behind the animals that roamed the area. IHRA Introduces The Summit Sportsman Spectacular

As the racing season comes to a close for the year we look ahead to the IHRA switching to an all-bracket racing format for the first time in the organization's history in 2018. The IHRA will produce both the Summit SuperSeries and the new Summit Sportsman Spectacular programs next season.

The very successful IHRA Summit SuperSeries returns for a 17th season and continue to be the leading bracket racing program for Top, Mod and Junior Dragster competitors in North America. The program is hosted by nearly 100 member tracks and has over 8,000 active and specifically registered participants.

There will be a major change in the IHRA lineup as it moves from the class racing-based Summit Sportsman National Championship series to the newly-created Summit Sportsman Spectacular. The new bracket racing-based program consists of 20 races over ten weekends. Summit Racing Equipment will support the program through a new multi-year sponsorship.

Over time the input from racers, partners, and tracks and resulted in these changes to an all-bracket racing program, and is designed to improve participation levels in IHRA class racing. The new Summit Sportsman Spectacular bracket events will be targeted to Top, Mod and Junior racers looking for a value-oriented and fun double-race weekend. The series will work in conjunction with the Summit SuperSeries to provide tens of thousands of grassroots bracket racers new opportunities and events that are designed to provide maximum value for the participants.
