2017 was a Record Year for Skoda Ireland

Despite the Irish new car market down by 10pc compared to 2016, Skoda has increased new car turnover by 1pc to €146 million in 2017, and increased turnover from parts and accessories by 8pc to €9.6 million, writes Trish Whelan.

Skoda Ireland says more customers are availing of their finance offers with the brand loaning over €112 million to customers over the past twelve months, an increase of 5pc on 2016.

Skoda Ireland have also recorded market share of 6.9pc which is the highest ever share recorded by the brand in Ireland and saw them deliver 9,056 new cars to customers this year. Skoda is the sixth bestselling car brand in the country for the third year in a row and aims to finish in the top five in 2018.

The five new models introduced in the past year include the new Kodiaq and Karoq SUVs, a refresh to their compact Citigo and Rapid models, and a newly designed top-selling Octavia.

John Donegan, Brand Director at Skoda Ireland said “There’s no doubt that the new car market has been impacted by the level of imports in 2017. Brexit and sterling values pose big threats to the industry but Skoda has remained strong based on our extensive range, strong dealer network and competitive offers. We are even more optimistic for 2018 based on our impressive order bank to date and also due to the increased supply of our new Karoq SUV which launched earlier this month.”

Just over 53pc of the cars sold by Skoda here were financed by Skoda Finance.

Toyota extending pure EV cars aims

Toyota is planning to have more than 10 full battery powered cars in its model offerings by the early 2020s, writes Brian Byrne.

Underpinning this aim is the company's active development of solid state batteries that are good enough for automotive applications.

Toyota is also, like electric car maker Tesla, developing plans for setting up dedicated car charging networks in countries where it sees a big enough marketing opportunity.

Hedging its bets, because it already has fuel cell vehicles on sale, it is implementing infrastructural requirements for that in the form of hydrogen filling stations in relevant markets.

Toyota recently announced a tie-up with Panasonic to develop 'prismatic' batteries for hybrid car applications, where Toyota is world leader.

Scrap that banger for car-share credit

A car sharing enterprise in Ireland is offering owners of old and little-used cars an opportunity to scrap them in return for car-sharing credit, writes Brian Byrne.

GoCar is particularly targeting cars that are idle but costing their owners fees in tax and insurance as well as NCT inspections.

The scheme is available to anyone 21 years or older with a full driving licence and a suitable vehicle.

Applicants to the scheme register their vehicle details with GoCar and their estimate of its value. The details will be assessed by GoCar and an offer made to the applicant.

GoCar operates a fleet of cars, vans and electric vehicles at various locations, which will be augmented in January by 200 more 181-registered vehicles.

Full details are available at gocar.ie/swapmycar.

New Mercedes-Benz appointments for future growth

MSL Ballsbridge
Mercedes-Benz has expanded its network with the opening of three new dealerships in Dublin, Galway and Wexford and the redevelopment of two longstanding dealerships in Ballsbridge and Athlone, writes Trish Whelan.

The new MSL Grange dealership at Pottery Road, Deansgrange in Dublin has been transformed into a full-service Mercedes-Benz sales and after-sales dealership.

Grange Motors
Further new dealerships appointed are the Connolly Motor Group on the eastern approaches to Galway city and another situated on the approach to Wexford from Gorey, operated by Boland’s of Wexford.

The expansion by Connolly Motor Group into Galway city fills a void in the Mercedes-Benz network that has existed for some time and strengthens the relationship between Connolly Motor Group and Mercedes-Benz following the successful opening of their first Mercedes-Benz dealership in Sligo earlier this year.

The appointment of Boland’s of Wexford and their development of an exclusive new Mercedes-Benz dealership in Wexford is one that sees another of Ireland’s foremost motor retailers being welcomed into the Mercedes-Benz network.

Similarly, at the Michael Moore Car Sales dealership on the busy approach to Athlone, an equally ambitious redevelopment programme has seen this important Midlands dealership expanded and brought up to latest international standards.
Commenting, Ciaran Allen, sales manager for Mercedes-Benz passenger cars in Ireland said: ‘with Mercedes-Benz’s sights now fixed on expansion in all market segments, our drive to strengthen our representation and create a solid foundation for our future growth is fully reflected in the calibre of these appointments’.

Families test Volvo autonomous cars

Volvo has begun a programme of autonomous cars testing on the streets of Gothenburg, by local families who will drive the specially equipped XC90 SUVs in what is called the 'Drive Me' project, writes Brian Byrne.

The first two families have already taken delivery of their cars, and over the next four years up to 100 people will have been involved in the project. Engineers will monitor their everyday use and interaction with the car, as they drive to work, bring children to school or go shopping for groceries.

During these first stages, the families will keep their hands on the steering wheel and supervise the driving at all times when using their cars. But, over time, all participants in the Drive Me project will gradually be introduced to more advanced assisted-driving cars, after receiving special training. Even then, testing these more advanced cars will initially take place in controlled environments with supervision from a Volvo Cars safety expert. No technology will ever be introduced if there is any question over its safety.

Volvo plans to have fully autonomous cars commercially available by 2021.

Staying guests praise the hotel for its spacious, clean and quiet rooms. But be aware; the hotel has a very limited number of rooms, so you might want to book early in advance to secure your room!
